The Industry

Insurance professionals are one of the first responders on-site, at a time when people need it the most, insurance professionals are there to help. Critical thinking, among negotiation and communication skills, are required to help problem-solve during stressful circumstances. Insurance is at the forefront of game changing issues and is looking to grow its workforce significantly over the next 5 to 10 years. This means that there is a wide array of opportunities for students just like you.

Trevor Buttrum

Trevor Buttrum

Trevor Buttrum is Manager, Career Connections at the Insurance Institute of Canada and lead content author of the Institute’s career management resources. Trevor leverages over 15+ years of frontline and leadership experience to help connect young adults and career seekers to pursue one of the many skilled professions available in the insurance industry. Trevor’s passion is anchored by post-graduate studies in adult education and career development. He was named 2018 TalentEgg Recruiter of the Year (Individual), as voted by students and recent graduates.

Vlad Koltchine

Vlad Koltchine

Vlad Koltchine has been working in the Insurance industry for 17 years, starting his career right out of school as a co-op student and then working summers with State Farm. After 7 years with direct writers, Vlad moved over to the broker side and helped progressive operational management roles in Canada and the UK. He also spent 2 years at Aviva leading Digital & Innovation. Currently, Vlad is leading personal lines operational transformation at Wawanesa. Vlad has a Master of Science in Management & Economics, has his CIP designation, a Six Sigma Greenbelt certification and is a PRINCE2 Practitioner.

Colin Laird

Colin Laird

Colin Laird is Senior Vice President of Commercial Insurance at Chubb Insurance Company of Canada. Colin has spent 16 years at Chubb where he has held leadership positions in New Business Production, Commercial Operations, Commercial Services, Business Solutions and Client Retention departments. Colin was named Chubb’s inaugural “Coach of the Year” for Chubb’s North American business as well as “Dean” of the company’s Trainee School in 2018. Colin holds an honors bachelor of Commerce degree, Economics Minor, from McMaster University. He and his wife have 3 children and call Port Perry, Ontario home.

Gavin Mascarenhas

Gavin Mascarenhas

Gavin is the head of Claim Shared Services for Travelers Canada and has held prior positions as the Head Office Business Solutions Manager, Auto and Property Regional Manager and Assistant Vice President of Claim Operations. Gavin has worked in a variety of different roles which include, Claims, Operations, U/W, Sales and Service, Business Solutions and Administration. He is an active member of the Insurance Institute of Canada’s Ambassador and CIP Society programs. He was a certified instructor within the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) program and was acknowledged with the Insurance Institute Instructor of the year award from the Hamilton and Toronto chapters respectively.

Andrew Steen

Andrew Steen

Andrew Steen started his insurance career in 1991 with Guardian Insurance in Vancouver. After 7 years at Guardian, Andrew moved to Chubb Insurance where he spent nearly 15 years in various roles, including SVP of Commercial and Specialty lines and member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Subsidiary. Andrew is also the Berkley Canada President, a position he has held since 2013, as well as the founder of the Leadership Learning Circle - a multi-company leadership development program designed to help accelerate the growth of high potential young leaders across the industry.

Lynne Vonwistinghausen

Lynne Vonwistinghausen

Lynne has more than 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, working in various roles such as a senior executive responsible for Operations & Technology with a large international insurance company. Currently, Lynne is a managing director leading Marsh Canada’s Operations & Technology function. In this role, she has accountability for a team of more than 70 colleagues who provide strategic oversight and support to colleagues in Marsh’s 13 offices across the country. She is responsible for establishing national strategic operations and technology roadmap designed to enhance Marsh’s operational efficiency and maximize client satisfaction.
