Program Overview

Humber’s Bachelor of Commerce - International Business degree program will help you develop the knowledge and applied skills you need to carve out a career not only in a multinational company but also in nimble, fast-paced small- and medium-sized businesses and entrepreneurial ventures that are open to the outside world. Our program combines a balanced approach to teaching business featuring case studies, problem solving, modelling and data analytics in support of decision-making. Course content, skill-building activities, writing and applied projects maintain a strong focus on the three major pillars of international business: marketing, finance and operations.

Our program starts with a foundation of business studies in areas such as consumer behaviour, micro and macroeconomics, finance and accounting, law, marketing, and operations management. Specialization courses in international business will give you the opportunity to acquire practical skills through applied projects such as creating a full business and strategic plan to launch a business in an external market. You will gain experience developing processes from concept through to execution. Examples of specialization courses include Intercultural Communications, International Finance, Supply Chain Management, International Logistics, International Marketing, International Trade Law, and Strategic Business Analytics.

You will learn from experienced professors and a network of industry professionals who provide feedback and evaluation on industry projects, culminating with the final semester program capstone course International Business Project. In that capstone course, you will work with a real-world business enterprise and develop a comprehensive international business expansion plan for them.

Capstone Presentations: the Most Comprehensive Project in the Program

The capstone report and presentation are the largest and deepest deliverables that students produce in the program. It requires students to pull together the sum of the knowledge and skills they have acquired throughout the first seven semesters of the program while they prepare a comprehensive business plan for a client company (an actual business working with their group). The brief includes planning the expansion of a product or service offering outside Canada (if the host organization is based in Canada), or in Canada (if the host organization is based in a foreign country).

The capstone project operates like a consulting project in which students have to gather and analyze data, complete missing data, and draft plans for all aspects of the expanded business (for, but not limited to, the three pillars of International Business: international marketing, international operations, and international finance).

Students prepare their presentations, including their recommendations, in a persuasive way. Presentations are made to an audience including other students, faculty, and a panel made up of Program Advisory Committee members and outside industry people), and representatives of client organizations (the companies that teamed with each group of students).

Students rise to the occasion while working with faculty mentors who guide and motivate students throughout the process. In business, this kind of advisory work is complex, but the calibre of student work is always really high. Students who have shown their reports to prospective employers have said that it played a decisive role in securing a position after graduating. The exposure to the different areas covered during the capstone project gives students a good overview of the aspects of business that appeal to them most for career prospects.

Graduate Testimonial

"I attribute my success at Humber to the faculty who have taught, mentored, and supported me throughout. Each of my professors has impacted my experience positively—and each in their own unique way. I was fortunate to have an incredible Program Co-ordinator, Pierre-Pascal Gendron, who early on made an effort to guide me, and ultimately helped me realize my potential. Pierre-Pascal challenged and pushed me; he helped me to mature not only as a student, but also as an individual and young professional."

— Julia, Program Graduate

Graduate Testimonial

"Working on group projects was the highlight of the International Business program, with engagements that facilitated cultural exploration through research. The program attracts individuals from diverse backgrounds with international perspectives. Professors provided insights and real-life examples to make lectures interesting and engaging, with a challenging and rewarding project structure. I had the opportunity to do a semester abroad at Robert Gordon University (Scotland) and both schools’ study abroad teams were very helpful. Throughout my entire experience at Humber, the Program Coordinator, Prof. Pierre-Pascal Gendron, went above and beyond to support my academic and professional success."

— Kenneth, Program Graduate

Your Career

Business today is highly complex, interconnected and increasingly global with vast amounts of goods, services and capital crossing borders daily. Our program will provide you with the broad perspective and understanding needed to develop a successful career in business here in Canada and anywhere around the world.

The international trade sector is absolutely central to the Canadian economy. According to Statistics Canada, total international trade (exports plus imports of goods and services to and from other countries) continues to account for a very significant proportion of Canada's gross domestic product at current market prices. In addition to trade in goods and commodities, Canada is a major player in the services trade including areas such as energy, finance and financial services, mining, and technical services. This is a fast-growing sector that has tripled in value in the last 25 years and carries increasing demand for skills in all areas.

Globalization is not a smooth path. Global market instability created by unpredictable events (e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of climate change, the dematerialization of finance and cryptocurrencies) requires professionals to be trained with up-to-date concepts and methods and exposed to new ideas by established industry professionals.

Our degree is cross-functional and will prepare you for a range of industries depending on your preferences and skills including foreign investment; external business development; logistics; customs; freight forwarding; trade consulting; international finance and risk management; and international marketing, sales, and research.

A day in the life of an international business professional could involve reaching all the way around the world, either in person or virtually. Your day-to-day work will be varied and exciting – everything from drafting a full-fledged business plan for expansion into a new international market, through managing foreign exchange risk, to planning and executing the logistics of getting a product overseas.
