This coming winter, students in the Accounting Co-op, Global Business Management and Business Administration Co-op programs will be getting their first real exposure to the accounting industry and a sneak preview of their future careers. Beginning in January, nine Humber Business School students will begin their 13-week winter work placements with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) locations in Hamilton and Mississauga.

The CRA was impressed by many of the Humber candidates they interviewed. Students were very knowledgeable, well-prepared and very professional during their interviews. Of the students who were selected, three will be working at the Hamilton CRA location, and six will be working at the Mississauga location.

During their placements, the students will act as part of the CRA team and be given significant workplace responsibilities to carry out. So what will the students be working on exactly? Janelle Vermeer, the Co-op and Placement Advisor, explains: "CRA Hamilton hired students to work in the Social Program lines (Canada Child Tax Benefits, Goods and Services Tax Credit, etc.). CRA Mississauga hired students to work in the Revenue Collections division, and students will be placed into different roles (Trust Accounts Examination Officer, Non Filer Officer, Collection Contact Officer and Revenue Collections Student)."

On the administration side, the CRA representatives have been a pleasure to work with. They have been very understanding and accommodating with adjusting the start dates of the winter co-ops. They are very excited to welcome these students to their team and see first-hand what a Humber-trained student brings to an organization. Similarly, the students can't wait to get started and are very thankful for the opportunity.

Thanks to Kesha Guilford, Anthony Stracevic and Azharul Hassan from CRA for all of their help organizing these placements, as well as Robert Cinapri, Program Coordinator for the Accounting Co-op Diploma. And congratulations and best of luck to our nine students. We’re confident this will be an amazing and eye-opening experience for all of you.
