Second Annual Aboriginal Moot Held at the Lakeshore Campus
Thu, May 16, 2019
On April 12, 2019, Paralegal Degree students held the Second Annual Aboriginal Moot at the Lakeshore Campus.
The Aboriginal Moot was the capstone assignment for students in the Indigenous Legal Perspectives course. To open the Second Annual Aboriginal Moot, students toured the Indigenous Cultural Markers recently installed at the Lakeshore campus.
The Longo Faculty of Business is meeting Humber’s aspirations pursuant to the Indigenous Education Protocol, and has responded to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, by modifying the Paralegal Degree Program curriculum. The new course compares Aboriginal Law with Indigenous Legal Traditions. Professor Shirley Wales, a lawyer and former Adjudicator for the survivors of the Indian Residential Schools, designed and taught the new course. She incorporated research from her PhD studies, including the Indigenous Legal Traditions course taught by an Elder.
The Aboriginal Moot follows the format of the Kawaskimhon National Aboriginal Moot. Most Canadian Law Schools participate in the Kawaskimhon National Aboriginal Moot. The Moot is also known as “The Talking Circle”. Students engage in roundtable negotiations with the aim of reaching a consensus-based settlement. They rely on Indigenous Legal Traditions, as well as provincial, federal, and international law. The students were honoured to be joined at the Second Annual Aboriginal Moot by Associate Dean James Cullin, and by Paralegal Degree faculty members Dr. Karen Schucher and Dr. John Allen.

Thu, April 11, 2019
On March 16th, 2019, World Wildlife Foundation conducted its first event of the year, "Living Planet@Campus: Designing Change for a Living Planet."
Over 80 students from over 15 colleges and universities around Ontario participated in the event, including students from The Business School.
The Humber team, formed through an application process led by the Office of Sustainability, consisted of four students representing different programs and faculties in Humber: Gayathri Menon, Fashion Management and Promotions GC, Arman Amin and Samantha Canon, Bachelors in Industrial Design, Ayushi Delvadia ,Bachelors of International Business.
The day-long event saw team work at its best as team Humber worked very hard on its idea and presentation. Collaborating with students from different fields helped participants gain an insight into what the issues faced by other industries are and forced students to think outside the box.
Despite the fact that the Humber team did not win first place, the team's idea inspired the Office of Sustainability to install an art piece made out of paper cups to spread awareness on the importance of carrying personal reusable mugs. The outcome was highly rewarding as students learned how an idea can transform and make a difference in the world today.

Along with the exchange, the event provided the opportunity for people to share their best-piece-of-clothing story at the Selfie Station and to learn what the slow fashion movement is all about. Adding to the event was a panel discussion from industry experts on sustainability, including representatives from the City of Toronto and clothing brand H&M. International Development Degree Alumnus Secures Job Post-Graduation
Wed, February 06, 2019
Ryan Geleynse, an International Development Degree grad, began working with EduDeo Ministries as the Eastern Canada Key Relationship Manager.
Upon graduation from the International Development Degree at Humber, Ryan Geleynse began working with EduDeo Ministries as the Eastern Canada Key Relationship Manager. EduDeo is an organization that works to advance and support Christian education around the world. Ryan’s job is to build relationships with EduDeo’s donors, whether households, schools, churches or foundations, and to find alignment between their passions and the organization’s projects.
Ryan secured a placement during his degree with World Renew, an organization linked to the Christian Reformed Church. His placement in the Global Volunteer Department became a source of income and employment as he completed his degree. World Renew places hundreds of volunteers in roles around the world every year to respond to disasters, work in community development or to service communities. Ryan loved that the organization’s volunteers would range from students to retirees.
Ryan says, “I’m so thankful for education I received at Humber. My degree provided a critical lens for engaging some of the challenges within the sector. I can approach our donors with confidence, knowing I’m there to advocate on behalf of our partners, providing necessary nuance to conversations that may head off the rails, otherwise. However, I miss the readings, the papers around topics I found provoking, and classroom discussions we had at Humber.”
Ryan married during his time at Humber College. His wife works in the international development field, too; however, her career has been suspended as she gave birth to their first child in July, Oliver, a baby boy. Congratulations!

The fashion industry is one of the most impactful industries in waste and pollution. There are many things that we can do to eliminate waste, such as: reducing consumption of non-sustainable products, choosing to buy local or Canadian-made products that have not travelled around the globe, and finding ways to reuse garments and accessories in order to reduce the amount of textiles ending up in landfills. The visit reinforced Humber strategic priorities of career-ready citizens and innovation in education.

Humber Spa “Evaluapp” to Streamline Classroom Learning
Mon, June 18, 2018
George Paravantes MFA IxD, Program Coordinator Multimedia Design and Development, has helped the Humber Spa develop their "Evaluapp."
"The Humber Spa App is a Tablet Application focused on moving the conversion forward on Mobile Learning tools in the classroom. The Tablet Application is focused on helping facilitate the “Moment of Need” and feedback to students as a Mobile Learning Support Tool.
The tablet application has been designed using Human-Centered Design methods to better understand both the lab technologist and student needs. The Tablet App enables lab technologists to mark more effectively and share student feedback in real-time. The classroom tablet scenario can be either an assessment or an evaluation.
Many of the in-process evaluations and assessments technologists use in labs tend to be on paper and require a transfer to a digital LMS system which can delay crucial feedback for students. Timely feedback can help to progress students more confidently in a project in class. Critical feedback at the right moments can sometimes create the creative confidence we look to instill in the students' project and work.
Finally, the tablet application has been purposely designed to be used not just by one program at Humber but any program or school across the college that evaluates or assess in-process work. It imports banner students list and lets the technologist create Assessments and Evaluations with a rubric in a fast intuitive gesture-driven touch Interface."

David Hutcheon, Adjunct Professor in the Public Administration Program arranged for his students to see City Council’s Executive Committee meeting.
Monday, March 19, 2018, was a historic day for Toronto’s municipal governance. It was the first time that the city’s Executive Committee held its meeting outside of Toronto City Hall. The meeting was held at the Scarborough Civic Hall in Scarborough’s former municipal council chamber. It was also the last Executive Committee meeting attended by City Manager Peter Wallace who will become the first senior civil servant to serve at the top levels in three levels of government. Wallace is leaving the City to become Secretary of the Treasury Board in Ottawa. Prior to joining the city, he was a top civil servant at Queen’s Park serving as Deputy Minister of Finance and Secretary to Treasury Board and Deputy Minister and Associate Secretary of the Cabinet, Policy.
The city’s top bureaucrat tabled the much-delayed, “Long-term Financial Plan: The City of Toronto’s Roadmap to Financial Sustainability,” in which he outlined that if no new revenues are found, the city will have a $1.4 billion operating budget gap in 5 years. The report states that “there is a growing gap between council’s vision for Toronto and available funding.”

Humber International Development Grad Making a Difference in Mongolia
Wed, February 28, 2018
Ken Umali, a recent graduate of Humber's Bachelor of International Development program, is currently working in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Ken is working as a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Advisor for Uniterra. The M&E role involves tracking the progress of Uniterra programs, ensuring that the organization is meeting its goals and objectives on time, which are skills he learned during his time at Humber.
With Uniterra - a program jointly managed by 2 Canadian international development organizations, CECI and WUSC - Ken's responsibilities include co-designing, administering, and supervising data collection activities from project partners in Mongolia. This data is used to draft reports and monitor achievements to help the program meet its overall objectives of changing people's attitudes toward the real needs of the country and to reduce poverty.
"My time at Humber was amazing!" said Ken. "I feel that the ID program has given me a clearer understanding of the development industry & practice, along with a better understanding of my own vision for my future. The program faculty come with a wealth of experience, and have equipped me with practical skills that prove to be useful in the field."
Ken's overseas placement for his Bachelor's Degree was with the Emmanuel Development Association (EDA), a grassroots development organization based in Ethiopia. He worked as EDA's Program Support Officer in the organization's regional office just a few hours from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. With EDA, Ken tested his new skills during the implementation of USAID and Government of Canada-funded poverty reduction projects.
Fashion Students Visit the ROM’s Christian Dior Collection
Tue, February 13, 2018
On February 1st, over 200 Fashion students and faculty had the privilege of attending the Christian Dior collection event at the Royal Ontario Museum.
On February 1, over 200 students and faculty from the Fashion Arts and Business, Fashion Management and Promotions, and Fashion Management, Bachelor of Commerce programs had the privilege of attending the Christian Dior collection event at the Royal Ontario Museum. The collection showcases the works of Christian Dior from 1947 to 1957, which, after the devastation of World War II, revived the Paris haute couture industry.
The event featured a welcome and overview of the exhibit given by Alexandra Palmer, the fashion costume senior curator and chair of the Veronika Gervers Research Fellowship in Textiles & Costume at the ROM. This was followed by a main-lobby reception before the groups were brought in to view the exhibition.
Jennifer Dawson, Fashion Arts Business program coordinator, collaborated with Douglas Mandel, the VP of Dior Canada and Las Vegas, to give students exposure to this fashion visionary and vital moment in the history of western fashion.
“It’s great to learn the history of fashion, especially in a generation that is not run by social media. It’s great to see how they promoted this fashion and to see how Christian Dior played a prominent role in Canadian fashion,” said one student after viewing the exhibit.
This event was an excellent learning and networking experience for students as they prepare to launch their own Fashion Show, Haute Humber, on April 10th.

GBM Students Launch Humber GBM Student Association
Mon, September 11, 2017
This past June, students in the Global Business Management program launched the Humber GBM Student Association.
According to the GBM Association website, their mission is to “offer support and guidance to all Global Business Management students in transition from school to the Canadian labour market.”
Since the Association's launch, the management and executive teams have been busy organizing networking events, student and alumni meet-and-greets and workshops, as well as posting bi-weekly profiles of GBM alumni on the blog and composing and distributing monthly email newsletters.
To date, their biggest event was the Humber GBMSA Networking Event on July 18th, which was also the official launch of the GBM Student Association. The event was a huge success, as over 100 students, alumni and industry professionals attended. Current GBM students had the chance to interact with GBM alumni and listen to them speak about their work experiences during panel discussions.
It’s wonderful to see students take initiative, help their peers, network and launch new ventures like the GBM Student Association. It’s exactly the type of values and skills we teach at The Business School - this mindset and work ethic is essential for future success.
Congratulations to all those involved in the GBM Student Association. Keep up the great work, and we can’t wait to see what events and initiatives the GBM Student Association launches next.
If you would like to connect with the GBM Student Association, follow them on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.
