WORKSHOP BISM 402Excel Macros and VBA: Level 2 – Data Analysis

Connected Workshop Series

The prerequisite for this workshop is BISM 401. This workshop is part 2 of a three part workshop series that works towards an increased understanding of Data Input, Data Analysis, as well as Formulas and Functions to facilitate better workplace applications.

Data Analysis

Learn to analyze data using Excel's analytical tools including Data Consolidation, Data Filter, Data Outline, Data Subtotals, Advanced Charting Techniques as well as PivotTable/Charts. And learn to use macros to enhance the usefulness of these tools. Also, learn best practice for Excel data structures which enable Excel's data analysis tools to operate as intended.

1. Automate Data Consolidation

• Create a Consolidation Sheet with Links to Other Workbooks
• Create a Parameter-driven Macro to Consolidate Multiple Files
• Implement User Friendly Messages to Trap VBA Run-time Errors
• Summarize Non-Standard Sheet Formats using Data > Consolidate

2. Automate Data Sort and Subtotals

• Sort then Subtotal, and Use Group & Outline Column
• Automate Sort and Subtotal by Using a Macro

3. Automate Data Filters

• AutoFilter and Advanced Filter “Filter Status” Issues
• Filter Status using AutoFilter with Button Macros
• Filter Status using Advanced Filter with Macros

4. Automate Data Import and Chart Creation

• Import Data via a Web Query and Prepare to Chart Data
• Create a 2-Axis Chart and Save it as a Chart Template
• Use a Macro to Apply the Chart Template to a New Import

5. Automate PivotTables

• Create and Modify a PivotTable
• Database Expansion and Data Grouping
• Automate PivotTable Analysis using Macros
