Public Administration Postgrad Students Meet Mayor John Tory

David Hutcheon, Adjunct Professor in the Public Administration Program arranged for his students to see City Council’s Executive Committee meeting and meet Mayor John Tory.

Monday, March 19, 2018, was a historic day for Toronto’s municipal governance. It was the first time that the city’s Executive Committee held its meeting outside of Toronto City Hall. The meeting was held at the Scarborough Civic Hall in Scarborough’s former municipal council chamber. It was also the last Executive Committee meeting attended by City Manager Peter Wallace who will become the first senior civil servant to serve at the top levels in three levels of government. Wallace is leaving the City to become Secretary of the Treasury Board in Ottawa. Prior to joining the city, he was a top civil servant at Queen’s Park serving as Deputy Minister of Finance and Secretary to Treasury Board and Deputy Minister and Associate Secretary of the Cabinet, Policy.

The city’s top bureaucrat tabled the much-delayed, “Long-term Financial Plan: The City of Toronto’s Roadmap to Financial Sustainability,” in which he outlined that if no new revenues are found, the city will have a $1.4 billion operating budget gap in 5 years. The report states that “there is a growing gap between council’s vision for Toronto and available funding.”

Humber students from the Canadian Municipal Government PA 5007 class were there to witness the Toronto Executive Committee meeting and met with Mayor John Tory.
