Bachelor of Commerce - Human Resources Management

Credential: Honours Degree Program Code: 22111 Length: 8 semesters

To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
    • Grade 12 English (ENG4U or equivalent) minimum 65 per cent
    • Grade 12 Mathematics (MDM4U, MCB4U, MGA4U, MCV4U or MHF4U or equivalent) minimum 60 per cent (Students who do not possess Grade 12U Mathematics or who have achieved a grade below 60 per cent may be considered for admission.  Students will be required to complete a math equivalency course during their first semester at Humber. Additional course fees will apply.) 
    • Four Grade 12 U or M courses in addition to those listed above
    • Overall minimum grade point average (GPA) 65 per cent

Our Program

Humber’s Human Resources Management degree program focuses on applied professional human resources (HR) practices and solutions. Our program starts with a foundation of business studies in areas such as organizational behaviour, law, economics, finance and accounting, marketing, and operations management. Specialization courses will focus on HR gaining practical skills through applied projects such as developing a business plan for the startup of a new HR department. You will have the opportunity to develop processes from the idea stage through to execution and you will learn from experienced professors and a network of industry professionals.

Humber’s Human Resources Management degree program is closely connected with the HR industry. You will have the opportunity to meet with a panel of the program’s advisory committee members to discuss career opportunities and to attend a series of workshops on human resources-related topics.

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Analyze the impact and long-range global challenges of economic, environmental, ethical, legal, political, sociological and technological factors upon the strategy, management and behaviour of domestic and global organizations.

  • Analyze, evaluate and solve business and economic problems, using diverse economic frameworks and relevant business models, creativity, analysis, independent judgment and critical self-awareness.

  • Formulate business strategies that assess costs, benefits, risks, opportunities and that address organizational goals and external trends.

  • Develop a business plan.

  • Interpret and prepare financial reports and assess the overall financial performance of an organization.

  • Evaluate the contribution of human resources management to organizational effectiveness and to other key functions within the organization.

  • Evaluate marketing strategies and assess their impact on consumers and the achievement of business goals.

  • Explain the management and use of business information systems, including e-business strategies, for personal and organizational success.

  • Acquire, interpret, analyze, evaluate and employ data, both qualitative and quantitative, from primary and secondary sources.

  • Critically analyze the forces that shape values, ideas, personal and societal circumstances and business decisions and present an academically structured, sustained and well-supported argument.

  • Assess strategies of operations management and their impact on domestic and international organizations.

  • Develop and implement project plans and schedules that make efficient use of resources and achieve organizational goals.

  • Communicate ideas using the most suitable medium for the message, audience and purpose, speaking or writing clearly, concisely, correctly and coherently.

  • Plan, develop, implement and evaluate HR strategies and policies related to staffing, compensation and benefits, employee performance management, training and development, employment equity and health and safety that are integrated with organizational goals.

  • Develop and implement labour relations policies and procedures, negotiate collective agreements and mediate labour disputes/grievances.

  • Develop human resource plans that are aligned with organizational goals and that respond to both current and future labour market conditions and evaluate their effectiveness.

  • Establish and manage systems to collect and safeguard HR information.

  • Plan for and manage the HR aspects of organizational change including developing strategies for communication and employee engagement.

Work Placement

The Humber Bachelor of Commerce – Human Resources Management program requires that you complete 14 weeks/490 hours of paid work in the summer between your sixth and seventh semesters. This gives you the hands-on, real-world experience that employers value. Your placement will give you the opportunity to explore the field you’d like to work in when you graduate. We will work with employers and our industry partners to help you identify opportunities to pursue.

With our degree, you’ll have the chance to pursue career opportunities in sectors as diverse as government, non-profit, manufacturing, hospitality, health care, financial services, education and more. You’ll be prepared for roles such as HR training co-ordinator, recruiter, compensation analyst, health and safety specialist, labour relations representative, benefits administrator and HR generalist.

A day as an HR professional could involve managing employee benefits and compensation, attending job fairs looking for new talent, helping resolve interpersonal conflict or advising in the hiring process. You could be called into meetings to share your knowledge of employment law, labour relations, health and safety, or compensation, as you help influence important business decisions.

Professional Accreditation, Endorsement and Recognition

The Human Resources Management degree meets the most current standards and academic requirements set by the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exams (CKE1 and CKE2). The CKE1 exam is the cornerstone for obtaining your CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional) designation through the HRPA. Successfully completing the CKE2 exam is one of the requirements to achieving the new Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation. The HRPA charges a fee to write the exams for these designations.

The Human Resources Professional Association is currently developing “program accreditation” standards for the CHRL designation. These developing standards may affect the curriculum for the Bachelor of Commerce – Human Resources Management program. For the most current curriculum, visit the program page on the website.
