The Value of Canadian Continuing Education

As a relatively recent immigrant to Canada, Xiaolei (Shelley) Li can attest to the value of Canadian continuing education programs. Before coming to Canada Li had already begun a career, working as an administrator in the business visa office of the Australian consulate in Shanghai. Having already earned a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Shanghai, Li augmented her existing educational credentials with Canadian academic qualifications. By taking advantage of continuing education opportunities she upgraded her credentials to signal to employers her interest in becoming knowledgeable about the Canadian employment market. That investment in herself is already paying dividends.

Upward Career Trajectory

Upon landing in Toronto in 1998, Li first worked as an accounting clerk for Nor-Don Collection Network Inc. completing an accounting certificate program at a local college. Her career really took off in 2005 after she moved to a position as a payroll administrator at Leggat Chevrolet—when she started Humber’s certified payroll manager program. After finishing the program, Li was promoted to payroll manager.

She didn’t stop there. Li returned to Humber to pursue the human resources management certificate program. The result? Just after graduation in 2009 her firm promoted her to manager of human resources and payroll. Coincidence? Li doesn’t think so. She thinks a commitment to continuing education goes hand in hand with career advancement. “Humber is second to none,” she says.
