Lorraine Greenwood loves how Humber’s hands-on cosmetics program prepares students to accept industry jobs right away. “Students can be employed in several areas. They can move around in the profession and feel confident. While they’re studying they can grow their portfolios and even build supplies and kits to do different jobs.”
Greenwood’s decision to join Humber’s faculty marked a confluence with her interests in cosmetics, film, and television. “Their courses and approaches seemed more interesting,” she says. “I believed in what they were doing and thought I’d help it grow.”
Her breadth of experience in all aspects of the cosmetics industry (Greenwood heads up the TV department and does film production) ideally positions her to reveal trade secrets and shortcuts, so students learn to improvise and solve daily problems.
Greenwood thinks students can’t get better advice than from teachers who are active in the industry. At Humber, students develop hands-on familiarity through practice plus the rationale behind the techniques. The cosmetics program is strong on retail and fashion, and the newer elements—stage, film, TV, and special effects—make for a more rounded offering.
Humber’s emphasis on the business aspects (such as marketing) helps Greenwood promote the freelance route to more students.
“It gets them ready for the real world.”
